Jungle Animals Fun: Monkey Swinging with a Peeled Banana

Hanging from a curving jungle vine by one hand, this happy monkey holds a half-peeled banana in the other. It has big round eyes, a wide open smile and a curly tail, so it's easy to see why kids like it. There's a large oval tummy patch, round ears and a little tuft of hair on top, and one foot kicks out like it's mid-swing. Big split-style tropical leaves fill the corners, and clusters of drooping bell-shaped flowers hang from the vine at the top left and right. Bold lines and roomy shapes suit younger kids with chunky crayons, and the leaf veins give older ones some detail. Warm brown fur with a light tan tummy and face, a bright yellow banana and a mix of greens for the leaves would be a good start. Print it at home for some screen-free time. Want more? A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big leaves in the corners and the vine using lime green and leaf green, mixing in forest green in the shadowed parts of the leaves.
- 2Color the monkey's fur in chocolate brown on the head, arms, body, legs and curly tail, leaving the light areas for later.
- 3Fill the monkey's face, ears inside, hands, feet and belly with light tan, and use peach for the lighter cheek areas.
- 4Color the banana in pale yellow and sunshine yellow, and add the red and yellow flowers hanging from the branches with bright red and sunshine yellow.
- 5Finish with coral pink for the open mouth, and leave the eye whites, teeth, highlights and the background white.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes of chocolate brown on the monkey's arms and a bit of forest green on the leaves to give them depth.
